skylineblog3.jpegFor those not naturally infused with a love for all things old and dusty, history can feel boring and useless. It can be difficult to see the impact of the past on the world today when you’re in a classroom learning facts and figures. However, if you’ve hitched your wagon to a genuine history lover — or if you want to further educate your children while they’re on school break — you may find yourself in a museum or library on more than one vacation. If you’re headed to Niagara Falls, you can experience history in a way you’ve never experienced.

Niagara Falls is full of history — it was inhabited by many native peoples before it experienced a thrilling Colonial period — and while you can learn plenty in the halls of Niagara’s museums, much of Niagara’s history has been preserved in important individuals’ own homesteads. You can learn personal stories of Niagara’s most historic events by touring the rooms of these individuals and seeing their possessions just as they were centuries ago.

Laura Secord Homestead

If you’re coming from the states, you probably don’t know much about Canada’s role in the War of 1812 — and if you don’t remember your history lessons, you probably don’t know much about the war whatsoever. No matter: At Laura Secord’s historic house and estate, you can learn quite a bit about both.

Laura Secord is the most important Canadian heroine of the War of 1812. Legend states that she walked 32 kilometers (that’s almost 20 miles) to warn British troops of an impending American attack. The tour of her home is particularly exciting, as costumed guides explain about her life and the war with period flare. Plus, at the end you can enjoy some chocolate and ice cream.

McFarland House

skylineblog4.jpegNiagara-on-the-Lake is a town that looks frozen in time, and that is in no small part due to the large manor home once owned and preserved by the McFarland family. Built in the early 19th century by a Scottish immigrant, the house also featured prominently in the War of 1812, as it served as a hospital for wounded soldiers as well as a strategic fort of sorts with guns placed around the property to protect the Niagara River.

Tours of the property are certainly educational, and treats and refreshment are also available in the Conservatory Tea Room. The house is the oldest in Niagara-on-the-Lake, but you can certainly fill your day with history and explore even more history by walking around the town.

Battle Ground Hotel

Even immediately after the War of 1812, interested citizens flocked to its most important sites to learn more about the battles. Niagara was unfortunate enough to experience the bloodiest battle of the war, the Battle of Lundy’s Lane, which means that many people traveled to the region to see and feel the war themselves. One particular tavern and inn, located dangerously close to the battlefield, changed its name and began showcasing important artifacts from the battle and war. That hotel has been transformed into a museum, but the rooms and bar remain exactly the same, so modern visitors can get the same experience as their predecessors.

Girl with Holloween MaskSometimes it can feel like Halloween is all about the kids. In every city, there’s trick-or-treating, costume contests, and creepy craft parties on every block to help little ones celebrate the holiday. But if you don’t have any kids yet, or you want a break from the kiddie activities for a weekend, you might have to travel. Luckily, Niagara Falls is looking out for adults this Halloween with a multitude of events designed specifically for over-16s. If you’re tired of white-sheet ghosts and goofy jack-o-lanterns, you can have an awesome and terrifying Halloween this year at Niagara Falls.

Rumours Night Club Halloween Party

On Halloween night, you should definitely head to the infamous Rumours Night Club to be a part of their annual Halloween party. With the hottest music spun by the country’s best DJs, Rumours virtually guarantees you’ll have a wild night. Their theme for Halloween is “erotic and exotic,” leaving plenty of scintillating costume options for ladies and gents alike. Plus, the winner of the costume contest could go home with $500 cash, so be sure to come dressed to the nines in your sexiest costume.

Rocky Horror Picture Show

A Halloween staple across the English-speaking world, the cult movie “Rocky Horror Picture Show” comes to life on stage at Niagara’s Oh Canada, Eh? Theatre. The story follows Brad and Janet, newly affianced, as they travel to inform Brad’s favorite professor of their engagement. When their car breaks down in front of an old, ramshackle mansion, they learn they’re in for the night of their lives. However, if you’ve never seen the movie, it’s just as well — the live performance is an interactive experience all its own. Come ready to participate, and don’t forget your squirt guns and paper hats.

Haunted Houses

Niagara-on-the-Lake, a short drive from Niagara Falls, is well-regarded as the country’s most haunted city, so it comes as little surprise that the Niagara region has some of the best haunted houses around. There are two options that stand above the rest to provide adults the chills of a lifetime:

  • Nightmares Fear Factory. This haunted factory has won awards and gained notoriety for its level of terror. Make sure you have someone to hold onto as you walk around Nightmares and try to avoid the vindictive old floor manager, Abraham Mortimer.
  • Haunted House Haunt Manor. This mansion dates back to before the War of 1812, but only a few years after the war the family who lived there disappeared under mysterious circumstances. There are some unexpected and unconventional scares at this haunted house, so bring your nerves of steel if you want to get out alive.

After Halloween Party at Boston Pizza Clifton Hill

Even when Halloween’s over, in Niagara Falls the holiday lives on. After you’ve rested up during the day on November 1st, head back to Clifton Hill for some excellent beers and great food. If your costume is salvageable — or you brought a backup, just in case — Boston Pizza has a costume contest as well, so interested party-goers have another chance to win awesome prizes.

American Falls Niagara Falls, Ontario has enough activities and attractions to sustain vacationers for a lifetime, let alone a week. However, sometimes when you’re traveling in an unfamiliar area, you like to see as much of the region as possible. If you’re taking a trip to Niagara Falls but want to get out of the city for a day, here are some close destinations that will keep you busy for the day until you come back to your comfortable room in a Niagara Falls hotel.

Niagara Falls, New York

As you may well know, Niagara Falls crosses the Canada-America border, and the series of falls that comprises Niagara Falls exists in both countries. The falls on the New York side, called the American Falls, lack the grandeur of Horseshoe Falls on the Canadian side, but they are dramatic and beautiful in and of themselves. You can take a day and explore the American Falls with one of the many day tours, and you can explore the plethora of New York–side attractions on your own. The Niagara Science Museum offers an in-depth look of the geology of the falls and the history of the region. The New York side also boasts an impressive aquarium with plenty of marine animals worth a look.

Niagara-on-the-Lake

Just a short drive away from bright and modern Niagara Falls, Ontario, Niagara-on-the-Lake seems like a town stopped in time. This quaint village has maintained the look and feel of a small community, even while it has so many worthwhile attractions for visitors. Niagara-on-the-Lake boasts more than a handful of world-class vineyards that offer tastings of their award-winning wines, and if you visit Niagara in the fall, you’ll probably be able to catch a show at the famous Shaw Festival, which showcases some of the best live theater in all of Canada.

Toronto

Cityline of TorontoYou can hop on the freeway, circle around Lake Ontario, and reach Canada’s bustling city of Toronto in just under an hour and a half. If you’re coming from the U.S., you’ll love getting a dose of a real Canadian city by walking around downtown Toronto. Take a ride to the top of the iconic CN Tower — the dominant feature of the Toronto skyline — or get a dose of culture by checking out any of the city’s great museums, like the Royal Ontario Museum or Gardiner Museum. You might even get the chance to see some excellent hockey if you come during the right season.

Buffalo

If you don’t know much about New York — outside of the big city, of course — a trip to Niagara Falls offers a great opportunity to explore upstate. Buffalo is a short jaunt from Niagara Falls and has plenty of attractions to keep you occupied for a day. You can see Frank Lloyd Wright’s quintessential Prairie Style in the Martin House Complex and Graycliff, and you can explore any number of galleries and concert halls in downtown. Just be sure you don’t miss out on any of the city’s world-famous dish; what better place to enjoy buffalo wings than the city that earned them their name?

A Guide to Niagara Falls Guidebooks http://www.skylineinnniagarafalls.com/blog/2014/09/guide-niagara-falls-guidebooks/ http://www.skylineinnniagarafalls.com/blog/2014/09/guide-niagara-falls-guidebooks/#comments Sat, 20 Sep 2014 11:11:26 +0000 http://www.skylineinnniagarafalls.com/?p=747 Most travelers like to know a bit about their destination before they leave for vacation, and most savvy travelers head straight to their local bookstore to pick up a guidebook. Niagara FallsMost travelers like to know a bit about their destination before they leave for vacation, and most savvy travelers head straight to their local bookstore to pick up a guidebook. However, both fortunately and unfortunately, there are a wide variety of guidebooks on the market for almost any location, let alone a popular tourist spot like Niagara Falls. After you’ve booked your Niagara hotel, you might need some direction to help you plan your activities and schedule out your days. If you’re struggling to find the right guidebook for your exploration of Niagara Falls, here’s our opinion on the guidebooks available to most travelers.

Fodor’s

You can usually trust the information in Fodor’s, and with large, full-color pictures of the destination, this publisher is particularly adept at building interest and making information accessible. The attention to detail that Fodor’s puts into its books is extremely helpful to novice travelers to any region.

However, Fodr’s lumps Niagara Falls in with its discussion of activities in Toronto. In fact, only one chapter — composed of a small handful of pages — discusses the attractions of the Niagara region, and of these much of the space is devoted to explanations about crossing the border. If Niagara is just one stop on your tour of Ontario, Fodor’s might be a useful resource, but for most Niagara tourists, this guidebook fails to deliver on the details.

Moon

A lesser-known series of guidebooks, Moon is gaining clout as one of the most comprehensive resources. Though Moon books aren’t available for all regions, the destinations that do exist tend to be focused and exhaustive.

Moon Niagara Falls is no different. The author is a native of the region, meaning he has had plenty of experience with the attractions that both locals and tourists enjoy. He also writes about the little-known places and activities that will make your visit stand out from the rest. This guidebook includes both American and Canadian sides of the falls, so you have the opportunity to explore the entire Niagara region — or just stick to the grandeur and excitement of Horseshoe Falls.

Frommer’s

Reading up on NiagaraFrommer’s guides are usually hit or miss when it comes to the information they provide. Because most Formmer’s guides don’t have the glossy, full-color pictures of many guides, they can be less eye-catching, and the advice they give tends to be less persuasive without the visual help. However, Frommer’s is excellent at providing pre-made itineraries for the places it describes which can be vital for busy families who don’t have the time to do their own research. Plus, the prices Frommer’s gives are usually on-point, allowing budget-conscious travelers to save up accurately in preparation for their trip.

Frommer’s Niagara Falls, while it lacks the vibrant photos of other guides, does hit the mark with the information it provides. Devoted to the Niagara region, Frommer’s really packs in the detail about restaurants, attractions, and viewing spots. Additionally, on top of all this, the guidebook inserts interesting facts and history of the region, giving the reader some background to consider while you’re wandering around Niagara Falls.

Having a guidebook can be essential to providing a complete trip, but you need to be sure you use the right guidebook for the experience you’re hoping for. You can take our opinions into consideration while you make your selection and begin planning your memorable trip to Niagara Falls.

skylineblog40.jpegNiagara has long held the top honeymooning position as the Honeymoon Capital of the World. The place has been magical for centuries, and not one ounce of mystery and wonder has disappeared since Niagara has become a vacation destination. However, if you’re worried that a modern-day couple won’t find anything exciting enough for one of the most important vacations of your life, think again.

The region is a wonderland for couples, full of intimate and significant experiences perfect for relationship building. The old attractions remain astounding and beautiful, but there have also been plenty of new developments that keep visitors coming back again and again. If you appreciate the falls but are looking for some new thrills as well, see what Niagara has to offer.

Old: See the Falls up Close

The falls are definitely the main pull for many travelers to the Niagara region, and it’s easy to see why. Thundering with the sound of thousands of gallons of water falling every second, the falls are massive and mysterious in their existence. The mists generated around the falls give couples some wonder-filled intimacy to fuel the romance of the trip.

There are dozens of locations from which to view the falls from a distance, but adventurous couples would do better to book some tickets for an excursion right up close to the falls. The Maid of the Mist has been around forever, it seems, providing patrons the ability to stand right beneath the powerful rushing water of the falls. The experience is eye-opening and awe-inspiring and will certainly get both of your pulses racing.

New: Winery and Brewery Tours

skylineblog41.jpegThe vineyards around Niagara Falls have been around for decades, but they are just now starting to gain international attention for the quality of their wines. The Niagara region is delightfully fertile which allows wine-makers to grow top-notch grapes for delectable drinks. There are dozens of local vineyards to see, and the acres and acres of green grapevines are certainly beautiful to behold.

A more recent addition to the Niagara region is the explosion of world-class microbreweries in the area. Unlike standard canned brews, these breweries craft lagers, ales and other varieties of beer with precision, adding subtle flavors for discerning palates. Specialty brewing is becoming popular in many cities, and Niagara Falls offers some of the best in the Northeast.

Instead of fretting about fitting both beer and wine tasting into your vacation, and worrying about what places are even worth your time, book tickets on a tour that will take you to the region’s best breweries andvineyards. You’ll get behind-the-scenes looks at the most celebrated locations, and you’ll get free transportation

As previously stated, Niagara Falls has fruitful soils perfect for growing just about anything. It’s no surprise, then, that local restaurants are able to source their food locally to get the freshest and most delicious ingredients for their meals. On your tour, you’ll have the opportunity to sample the region’s best beer and wine, but plenty vineyards and breweries encourage sampling food alongside your drinks, as drinking and eating go together just as perfectly as, well, you and your new spouse.

skylineblog30.jpegIt can be a headache planning a family vacation. You have to consider all your options when it comes to accommodation and food. You have to think about attractions that will suit everyone’s interests. You have to weigh costs.

By now you’ve probably realized that Niagara Falls is the only place you’ll be able to make every member of your family happy — activities and attractions are so varied that all manner of interests are easily addressed — but here are a few reasons you should choose the Skyline Inn as your base of operations.

The Deluxe Family Suite

Vacations can be tricky when you realize that you’ll be spending large amounts of time in rather close proximity to your sometimes exhausting albeit beloved family members. Instead of trying to cram everyone into a single-bed room, ensure your vacation is relaxing as well as fun by booking our Deluxe Family Suite.

The Suite features two roomy queen beds and a separate sleeping area with double-sized bunk bed. Depending on the size of your family, everyone could have a bed to him- or herself; at the very least, you won’t have to be tossing and turning all night in one bed piled high with people. Plus, each sleeping area has its own television, so when you’re relaxing in your room, you won’t have to fight the kids to control of the channel. The Suite also has an upgraded, spacious bathroom with all the amenities you could dream of — though you still might need to form a line to finish up everyone’s morning routines.

Dining Opportunities

The hotel has plenty of connections to family-friendly and delicious restaurants. Directly attached to the hotel, you’ll find the Perkins Family Restaurant which serves all three major meals with a variety of options to please all taste buds. Additionally, connected to the hotel via skywalk, the Hard Rock Café is a veritable dining experience filled with music, memorabilia and fun. Additionally, if you’d like dinner with a view, the Fallsview Restaurant has one of the best panoramas of the falls around.

The best thing about these dining options is that kids can eat absolutely free! At Perkins Family Restaurant and nearby Planet Hollywood, with the purchase of an adult entrée, you can feed your kids without dropping another dime.

In-House Entertainment

skylineblog31.jpegAfter a day of wandering around Niagara Falls and seeing everything there is to see — and trust us, there’s so much to see — you’ll probably want at least one easy night in. Nights at the Fallsview Water Park can give you just this.

Family Movie Nights are available to help calm down excited kids and give parents a comfortable and well-earned rest. Change into your pajamas and bring your pillows and blankets down to the indoor courtyard to find a giant living room replete with a huge movie screen. Movies rotate nightly, so you don’t have to worry about catching a repeat!

Fallsview Indoor Waterpark

Last, but certainly not least, Skyline Inn’s useful skywalk connects families to Niagara’s renowned indoor waterpark. Don’t worry about forgetting anything in your suite; you can easily commute from the park to your room without worrying about traffic or parking. Spend a day splashing in the pools or slipping down slides with frightful heights and speeds, then relax all night without ever leaving the comfortable climate-regulated inside rooms.

skyblog7.jpegWhen you think of the islands near Niagara Falls, most likely your first thought is of Goat Island, the small island located between Bridal Veil and Horseshoe Falls. However, there is another island paradise in the Niagara River, one that offers plenty of scenic beauty and a chance to escape from the hustle and bustle of the city.

The Dufferin Islands are a group of manmade islands located about 2 kilometers from Horseshoe Falls in the Niagara River. Here the river waters flow more slowly and gently than in the rapids leading up to the falls, creating a more serene and relaxing environment for enjoying the natural beauty of the area. If you’ll be spending some time around Niagara Falls, you wouldn’t be wasting your time exploring this fascinating area.

The History of the Dufferin Islands

The Dufferin Islands were the once the site of one of the Niagara Falls area’s first tourist attractions. Near the islands, back in the 1820s, a natural spring released a flammable gas. A local businessman found a way to cap the spring, and then release the gas and ignite it for paying tourists. The Burning Spring drew visitors for several decades, until work to improve the Ontario Power Company changed the shape of the islands forever.

Today, after nearly 100 years, the Dufferin Islands are a natural, forested 10-acre park, with well-maintained walking trails throughout. Small footbridges and suspension bridges connect the small islands of the park. While you could easily spend a few hours exploring the paths and enjoying a picnic or barbecue in one of the open fields or in the shade of a tree, there is much more to do on the Dufferin Islands.

A Natural Paradise

skyblog8.jpegIf you’re interested in bird watching or fishing, then the Dufferin Islands is the place to visit. Over the past decade, there has been a great effort toward naturalizing the area. Toward that effort, the parks commission has introduced fish to the waters surrounding the islands and created a catch-and-release fishing program that allows visitors to drop a line in the park. In addition, throughout the park you’ll find bird feeders and bird boxes designed to attract a wide variety of bird species.

One of the most popular features of the Dufferin Islands had nothing to do with fish and fowl, though. Each year, from November through January, the islands form the backdrop for the Niagara Falls Winter Festival of Lights. For this favorite tradition of visitors and locals alike, the island is dotted with a number of animated light displays. While the displays do close some of the park for a time, the islands do remain open throughout the winter.

One of the major reasons that the Dufferin Islands are so popular with locals and visitors alike is the fact that it’s completely free. All you need are some comfortable walking shoes, a picnic lunch and maybe a fishing pole and you have everything you need to join the millions of other visitors to Niagara Falls who have discovered the wonder of this unspoiled island paradise.

skylineblog20.jpegBy now, we’re sure you’ve heard of one of the most amazing experiences in Niagara Falls that takes place inside the Greg Frewin Theatre. The world-renowned magic extravaganza performed by master magician Greg Frewin evinces wonder in adults and children alike. But, like most of his kind, Greg Frewin seems to keep most of the details of his life close to his chest, surrounding himself with an air of mystery that make his illusions even more spine-tinglingly amazing.

If you are one of those audience members who simply must know how each and every trick is performed, here’s some information to get you started. Greg Frewin has led an astounding life full of magic and worthy of awe. Learn some facts about him to astound your friends and family during your next stay in Niagara.

Small but Powerful Beginnings

Greg Frewin is a natural born Canadian, and he grew up not far from Niagara Falls in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada. It’s impossible to say what exactly got him interested in magic in the first place; perhaps it was a natural tendency toward the unknown or a particularly pushy uncle. Nevertheless, Greg Frewin practiced his art from a young age, perfecting the smallest illusions quickly and moving onto more and more complex acts that astounded and amazed his friends and family. Undoubtedly, his peers were so impressed by his fantastic talents that they couldn’t help but wonder about his supernatural abilities.

International Awards — From Skill or Supernatural Powers?

Not long into his career as a professional illusionist, Greg Frewin began raking in awards for his unbelievable stunts. It certainly was not long until Greg Frewin was dubbed the first-ever Magician of the Year by the Canadian Association of Magicians. He won first place in the stage competitions of a plethora of contests, including:

  • The International Brotherhood of Magicians
  • The Society of American Magicians
  • Fédération Internationale des Sociétés Magiques (FISM) or The International Federation of Magic Societies

Later, upon establishing himself in Niagara as one of the top attractions — through talent or trickery, no one can say — Greg Frewin and his Greg Frewin Theatre became the Attraction of the Year, named by the Niagara Falls Misty competition. Greg Frewin is the only magician to date to have won so many competitions and accumulated such clout amongst the magical community. It’s clear that Greg Frewin possesses real abilities, but whether or not these abilities are natural or otherwise is difficult for any regular human to ascertain.

Current Performance — Judge for Yourself

skylineblog21.jpegThough there isn’t any evidence (yet!) Greg Frewin attended some magical school, it’s clear that he’s been devoted to the magical arts for most of his life. The only way for you to find out whether Greg Frewin is a certain sorcerer or practiced performer is to visit his theatre for yourself.

The show occurs nightly, so during your trip you’ll have plenty of opportunities to see (and re-see) the illusions to riddle out their inner workings. You’ll be treated to dinner as you feast your eyes on Greg Frewin’s magic, though the delicious food might just be a distraction to those hoping to pinpoint the source of the magician’s power.

Are you brave enough to experience the magic for yourself? Are you willing to believe?

skylineblog10.jpegThere’s no ifs, ands or buts about it — birthdays are some of the most important days of the year, especially when you’re a kid. Every year is a major achievement for children, who have gained another year of real-world experience to help them learn and grow into active, happy adults. If you don’t celebrate your child appropriately on his or her birthday, it’s likely he or she won’t understand the significance of the day and their past year’s achievements.

If you are proud of your kid and want to show them, plan a big birthday celebration for them in Niagara Falls. Niagara is the most family-friendly vacation location you’ll find, with dozens of attractions perfect for grown-ups and growing bodies alike. Here are a few of the best places to organize your child’s next birthday to show them you really care.

Fallsview Indoor Water Park

Niagara’s premiere indoor water park is one of the most fun places in the area. Chock full of slides, pools and play areas to entertain even the most erratic of little minds, the water park has something for everyone. The park has extra special birthday packages to make organizing the trip easier and more fun for your kids as well as lighter on the wallet for you.

What’s more, if you are planning a smaller affair, your fabulous hotel has great deals on tickets to the park (not to mention discounts for little ones who are dining and sleeping in Niagara Falls) which is not even a stone’s throw away from your comfortable room or suite.

Marineland

Skylineblog11.jpegIf you think your child is a bit of a marine biologist — or perhaps he or she just loves animals of any shape — he or she would love a birthday organized at Niagara Falls’ world-renowned Marineland. This place is a combination amusement park and marine zoo, with tons of exhibits with whales, dolphins and other sea creatures as well as thrilling attractions for kids of all ages.

You can catch a show with trained dolphins, beluga whales and sea lions or jump on board the Sky Screamer to fly hundreds of feet in the air. There are even opportunities to get up-close and personal with the animals to learn about their diet and behavior! Birthday parties at Marineland are sure to impress.

Clifton Hill

Clifton Hill is last word in family fun. It is the hub of Niagara Falls attractions, and any visit to Niagara Falls is not complete without it. Clifton Hill boasts some of Niagara’s most prestigious attractions, like the gargantuan Niagara Skywheel and the must-see Dinosaur Adventure. Kids and adults alike will love the Canadian Midway, where perhaps hundreds of arcade games blink and beep with the promise of fantastic prizes.

It’s easy to spend a whole day and night just on Clifton Hill, exploring the myriad food options and partaking in the thrilling attractions. Birthday packages make planning simple, and they can be fully customized to fit your party as well as the preferences of your child.

Make sure your child knows how special he or she is. A trip to Niagara Falls is a treat for any occasion, but birthdays in Niagara are simply unforgettable.
